Have you noticed that your stomach has been growling lately, and you don’t know why? It’s because your stomach knows it is almost time for SchertzQ. This year’s barbecue-packed festival is going to be on September 16. Come hungry, and prepare for a fun-filled day with the residents of Schertz.
The Events at SchertzQ
SchertzQ is sure to be a hit this year. The biggest draw will be the IBCA BBQ Cook-Off. With a purse of more than $10,000, lots of chefs are going to try their hands at taking home a prize.
Just in case that isn’t enough to get your appetite going, there will be food trucks serving up barbecue and other foods. You can also buy some barbecue-related items at the marketplace and enjoy some live music. Then, there will be a Show-and-Shine showroom for cars. There really is a little bit of everything at this annual festival.
Since the cook-off is going to be the main event, let’s take a closer look at it.
The IBCA BBQ Cook-Off
The cook-off has categories for:
- Pork spare ribs
- Cooker’s choice (no desserts allowed)
- Jackpot beans
There will also be a special Inaugural KidsQue Nation Cook-Off for pork chops. Anyone can register for the cook-off, so consider throwing your chef’s hat into the ring.
One of the best ways to make a name for yourself in the cook-off is to make your own sauce. Need some help? Check out an easy-to-follow recipe.
Texas Barbecue Sauce
When in Texas, cook like the Texans. This Texas Barbecue Sauce is sure to give you an upper hand at the cook-off, and it’s easy enough for the kids to make.
Put a tablespoon of butter in a saucepan and melt it. Throw in a clove of minced garlic and stir it for 30 seconds. Then, add in a cup of ketchup and stir it in. Finally, add in:
- 1/3 cup of packed golden-brown sugar
- 1/3 cup of Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice
- 1 chipotle chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper
Bring the ingredients to a boil and then let it simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Let it cool, then cover and chill it.
Don’t be afraid to add your own spin to the sauce to make it your own. With your help, this sauce can be a real winner.
