Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) is a national organization; CASA of Central Texas focuses on serving children in the Central Texas region. This organization focuses on providing advocates for neglected and abused children within the court system via recruiting and then training and supporting community volunteers. The national volunteer movement started in 1977 thanks to the efforts of Judge David Soukup from Seattle. CASA of Central Texas began in 1985 to serve those in Caldwell, Hays, Comal, and Guadalupe Counties. In 2017, the organization served 573 children with the help of 231 volunteers. This is just one of more than 1,000 programs across the country and 71 within the state.

Other Ways to Help CASA
If you can’t make it to the 22nd Annual KNBT 92.1 FM Americana Music Jam but want to support CASA of Central Texas, there are plenty of other ways to help. If you have the time, consider volunteering for the organization. As a volunteer, you would work with a single child or group of siblings at a time, letting you focus on that particular case. Volunteers are screened before undergoing training. So, you’ll have all the tools you need to advocate for the kids you assist. When volunteering, you would research case records; interview those in the child’s life; monitor the family and child’s progress; and advocate for the kid’s needs (current and future) in school, court, and agency meetings. For those who do not have that type of time, you can also donate to CASA of Central Texas, with the organization appreciating any donation you can make.
