The annual Ford River Race is back and now in its 49th year. Anyone is welcome to participate, and if you don’t want to get on the water, come to the San Antonio River Walk to watch the event!
Fun for Scouts and Everyone Else!
As always, the Ford River Race is open to the general public but has special pricing as well as unique activities for Scouts. Scout Youth Teams and Scout Leader Teams can participate as can public kayakers and public canoe two-person teams. Keep in mind that while the Youth Scout-geared events are for those between ages 11 and 20, the public events require you to be at least 17 years old to participate, and the Scout Leader Teams are for adults as well. If you are racing, be sure to check in at the Shops at Rivercenter, specifically Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville.
More Than Just Racing
All of the races during the morning start and end by the Chamber of Commerce building, so that is the perfect spot to watch the festivities. The Shops at Rivercenter host the awards ceremony. Head there at 9 a.m. to watch the Scout Award Ceremony and again at 10:30 for the Public Award Ceremony. This is also where you will find plenty of fun, including music to keep your energy going and the chance to interact with other racers and spectators.
This year’s Ford River Race is on August 5th and starts at 7 a.m. The Scout Youth Teams compete, followed by the Scout Leader Teams, and then the Scout Award Ceremony. If you are participating in the Scout races, check in at 7 a.m. and be ready to race at 7:15 or 8:15. Public check in begins at 8:45 a.m. with the first heat beginning at 9:15. This is then followed by the Public Award Ceremony.
When you check in, you will also get a free t-shirt from the event! Just remember that you are responsible for bringing your own gear, including your canoe or kayak and life jackets.
Bringing the Community Together
Every year, this river race is a fun event that all community members enjoy. Scouts, those who love kayaking and canoeing, and their family members all come out to race and watch. Expect to see people from all walks of life, including plenty in matching shirts or fun outfits to create their team theme.
The team at Nissan of New Braunfels can help you get the right vehicle to bring your canoe or kayak to the San Antonio River Walk and enjoy race day. We love being a part of the New Braunfels, Texas, community and that of surrounding areas. You may even spot some of us at the race!
